I recently decided to start a Dyansty League with 10-12 of my friends and competitors from other leagues.  I have never been in a Dynasty League, or even a keeper league before.  For those of you who do not know what a Dynasty League is, here is a link that explains: http://www.dynastyleaguefootball.com/hq/leaguehq.php

Goals: 

I created this league with a few goals in mind.  First, I wanted the league to be run by everyone.  So I encourage the managers to let myself and everyone else know if they have any ideas or suggestions.  The last thing I want are disgruntled managers, which leads me to my second goal.  In a Dynasty League, you must have longevity.  I want to make sure every manager is in it for the long haul.  I don’t want to put up with managers coming and going from season to season.  My final goal was to make the league fun and exciting.  I have a few tricks up my sleeve to make that happen.  I will cover those tricks later.

Expectatons: 

I have covered my goals, now I want to share a few of my expectations.  First, I expect the league to have a few kinks and flaws to work out in the first couple of years.  I expect to have at least one manager not happy with a rule or league setting.  I will make sure that I am up front and try to accomodate every manager, but I’m sure there will always be a disgruntled manager.  I expect this to be a lot of work, but a lot of fun also. 

Now I will go over a few of the rules that are already set in place.  We still have a lot to discuss and determine.  But the ground rules have been set in place.

Roster Rules:

We will have a 25 man roster.  Starting positions will be: QB, RB, RB, WR, WR, WR, TE, Flex (any RB, WR, or TE), Kicker, and Defense.  That means we will have 15 bench spots.  That sounds like a lot, but with a Dynasty League, I think it is important to have large rosters. 

Scoring:  Scoring rules pretty simple. 

.04 per yard passing (1 point per 25 yards passing)

 .1 point per yard rushing/receiving

6 points per TD pass/rush/receiving

Kicking: 1 points per extra point

.1 point per field goal yard over 30 yards (42 yard FG will be 4.2 points)

Defensive: 1 point per Sack, Interception/fumble recovery

10 points for a shutout, 6 points for 2-6 points allowed, 4 points for 7-13 points allowed, and 2 points for 14-20 points allowed. 

6 points per defensive/special teams TD scored.

 Draft: The draft is especially important in a Dynasty League because there is so much weighing on it.  The difference between a good draft and a great draft will probably determine how long it will take before you win the league.  If you draft a young, unproven, team then you will probably have to wait a couple of years to be competitive.  But when those young players turn into solid vets, then watch out.  I have decided to have party on the first day of the NFL draft.  At that party, I expect to have all of the managers present, which then we will go over any rules or questions that they will have.  We will also determine to order of the initial draft.  I am guessing we will just draw cards or something of the sort.  I want to make it as random as possible.  Knowing where you are drafting this far in advance should prepare all of the managers for draft night.  As far as the initial draft goes, we will do a serpentine or snake draft type.  I have heard the philosiphy of going 1-10 in round one, 10-1 in round two, and 10-1 again in round three, then 1-10, 10-1, etc for the rest of the draft.  That idea is suppose to make the draft more ”fair”.  I heard that idea a year or so ago and I think it is a good idea.  I mentioned it to the managers, but didn’t get much of a response.  I will bring it up again down the road.  Every other draft after this years will be determined by the place you finished the previous year.  Those drafts will be 5-10 rounds (hasn’t been determined yet) and will consist of free agents and rookies.  The managers will have the opportunity to pass when it comes to thier turn because for every player they draft, they have to drop a current player from their team.

Winning the League:  The winner of the league will be determined by a playoff of the top 4-6 teams in the league (yet to be determined).  The top 4-6 teams will make the playoffs which I think will run from weeks 13-16 in the NFL season.  I plan on having a “Toilet Bowl Winner” each year.  The TBW will get some money as well as a T-Shirt that I will have made up that says something of the sort.  I plan of having the winner of the shirt sign and date it each year and have it passed around.  The champion of the league will get a trophy, cash winnings, and bragging rights for a year.  I plan keeping about 10% of the winnings for a “league fund” which will go towards trophies and other needs.
